Burton

Yes, christmas did come early for me this year. I've bought myself a snowboard on the recent Hari Raya Korban, November 27th. I always wanted a snowboard. An old friend texted me when he found out about this

" Bro.. Lu memang think outside the box la. Lu dah prepare kot-kot Malaysia snow kan? Gua bangga dengan lu... High 5! haha "

I know it was full of sarcasm. But hey, at least he supported me. I was smilling when I read his text =) Merry Christmas to all of you. Ho Ho Hoooo

Being chauffered

Last wednesday, when I was being chauffeured around in eastern part of KL, I managed to idlely sight the view of what Kumar has branded as the slump of KL. Not too bad lah. There, you can clearly enjoy an unobstructed skyline of KL with the glittering Petronas Twin Towers torching its beauty at dusk.

Brrrr : it's not cold lah

Banana for breakfast, Indonesian's Ikan Balado or mix rice for lunch, Max Brenner choc for tea, Smith's Thinly Cut Sour Ceaam & Onion chips for snack and pear for dinner. My typical australian menu. Or rather my typical Melbourne's menu.

It's been a while since my last time in down under. It was cold back then. By right it supposed to be a just-nice weather this time around. Usually every month my work assignment will make me to be at least once (around 2 days 1 night) in Melbourne. Sometimes twice. How I miss Melbourne...

It's a weekend. So some buskers will fill the entertainment section for the day. And I'll skip Crown Casino for the time being tehehe =)

Oh, Ina birthday is just around the corner. This sunday to be precised. Will I be getting something for Ina? Best tak dapat hope Ina? ha haha I know Ina gonna belasah me for this.

Breaking fast with a Jew

It was a cold summer evening in Paris, near Bois de Boulogne. 2007 Rugby World Cup.

The group stage match between Italy and Portugal has kicked off. It was ramadhan and I was waiting for the time to iftar before I enter the Parc des Princes stadium. "I'm gonna be late" I was talking to myself while sitting on a bench outside the stadium. In europe, they don't let you smoke and bring either food or drinks into the stadium. So there was I, alone, hungry and late.

A male in his late 30s or maybe early 40s holding a McDonald's burger in his hand came and, in french asked my permission to join me on the bench. From how he looked like, I was quite sure he's not a gay. So I replied "Oui". Not that I understand french, but he included some hand gestures when he was asking for my permission. So I reckoned an Oui would be a perfect answer. After all, the bench is a public property with Propriété de la Ville de Paris stamped on it.

Minutes later, that guy whom has finished his mouth watering burger, tried to make a conversation. He amused me. Why? Because, after he learnt that I don't literally speak his native, immediately he started to converse in english. A descent english indeed for a frenchman. He asked whether I'm a muslim and promptly without hesitation I replied "Oui... Yes". But I am in no mood to have a chat because earlier, I had to walk and stand for hours, trying to sell my 3 spare tickets. Luckily, I managed to sell them off and made some handsome profit. Now I'm exhausted.

And before I know, he was giving me a lecture on Jew and Muslim. Ah malasnya aku nak layan. Yahudi rupanya mamat ni. Suddenly outside Malaysia, I'm become racist despite living in a no-racial issue life back home. But I have to iftar and now is the time to break my day long fast. 18 hours to be exact. So I told him "Sorry mister but I need to eat. You may continue your story if you want to". I turned into a passive listener while he continued with his bla bla bla. Interestingly, I do learnt something about Muslim and Jew, where of course his story did favoured his Jew descendants.

After my quick meal, I quickly "I need to go. Good to talk to you. Au revoir monsieur" and walk away from him towards the stadium's gate where I was supposed to walk up the stairs for my designated seat. Match was boring as it was between a non big team in rugby world. I left early before the match ended. An hour plus later I reach my hotel using a combination of metro and stage bus. But it was an experience for me, seated in a stadium in Paris to watch a Rugby World Cup match, befriended with other Italians and Portugese to illegally sell tickets and an iftar with a Jew.

Having interest in many fields, after that conversation now I like to think that anthropology is a very exciting. It is not a very fun read but it will enlighten you, make you a better human. As a person I mean.

Kia Ora!!!

A month ago in Auckland, there were this beautiful light show in the city, which was pretty amazing. In the wet and cold weather, I was standing with a couple of friend, mesmerised.

Kia ora is a Māori language greeting which has entered New Zealand English. It means literally "be well/healthy" and is translated as an informal "hi" at the Māori Language Commission website Kōrero Māori.[1]100 Māori words every New Zealander should know, with a definition "Hi!, G'day! (general informal greeting)".[2]

It also signifies agreement with a speaker at a meeting, as part of a culture which prizes oratoryinfotainment. Other Māori greetings, "Tēnā koe" (one person), "Tēnā kōrua" (two people) and "Tēnā koutou" (three or more people), are also widely used.[citation needed]. Likewise, "kia ora" can follow a similar pattern to address different specific numbers of people.

By itself, it can be used to address any number of people, but by adding "koe" (i.e. "kia ora koe") one can specify a greeting to a single person; "kōrua" (two people); "koutou" (three or more people); and by following with "tātou" one addresses all the people present, including the speaker themself.

The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage website NZ History lists it as one of
100 Māori words every New Zealander should know, with a definition "Hi!, G'day! (general informal greeting)".

ASTRO's Ah Seng Part 3

Two days ago, after a long month of not having ASTRO service at home, I've decided to terminate the old ASTRO and register for a new one (I reckoned the old ASTRO set, either the decoder or the dish itself has broken and it is cost efficient to terminate the service and get a new one as it is free now with the promotion is going on rather than fixing it).

At about 5.30pm, I went to a nearby ASTRO dealership and sign up for a new subscription after terminating the current account over the phone. Bongok betul, you need to give ASTRO a month notice prior to termination. My luck did not turn up today. The ASTRO free promotion has ended on 31st October.

The dealer said 'You need to pay RM80 for everything, decoder and the dish plus installation'. My negotiation skill kicked in. I've bargained a RM30 discount as I said 'I just need the brand new set. And if installation I require any istallation, I'll give you a call and you can charge me the RM30 after you send your guys to fix it. Apa macam?'. I've struck a deal.

A day after that.
I went downstair, with the new set is still in the box, the telly is on broadcasting channel 553 National Geographic. Damn!!! The old set tetiba ok pulak. I've called for all in tapi sekarang sudah kantoi. Haihhh. Damage control is being figure out by the think tank department.

Burgernomics

Let us be enlightened about our ringgit and sen value.

The Big Mac index is published by The Economist as an informal way of measuring the purchasing power parity (PPP) between two currencies and provides a test of the extent to which market exchange rates result in goods costing the same in different countries.

As of February this year, the most expensive burgers were in Norway (US$5.79), Switzerland (US$5.60), Denmark (US$5.07), Sweden (US$4.58) and Eurozone (US$4.38).

Now, here’s the interesting part. According to the same index, Malaysia (US$1.70) actually ranks No 1 among the five most affordable Big Macs, ahead of Hong Kong (US$1.71), China (US$1.83), Thailand (US$1.86) and Sri Lanka (US$1.95).

To be frank, I am not a real fan of fast food but when I am overseas and am at a loss as to what to eat, it is quite comforting to be able to step into a McDonald’s, KFC or Pizza Hut outlet, and order familiar items.

We also have to understand why some of our overseas friends do not like to be too adventurous with our wide array of Malaysian hawker fare, especially when they are on a short trip. There’s nothing worse than having to repeatedly run to the toilet because their stomachs are not accustomed to our delicious, spicy stuff.

Still on the same subject, I am trying to figure out why the fast-food joints are increasing the number of their 24-hour outlets.

In my neighbourhood, they compete with the Syeds and other 24-hour teh tarik outlets, and for the life of me, I cannot imagine anyone preferring a snack plate of original recipe chicken over a piping hot bowl of sup kambing in the hours after midnight, or a Big Mac over the Ramly burger sold at the roadside stall.

But they have obviously done their research, and I suppose my preferences are fast being overtaken by more global taste buds. That may well impact on the Burgernomics figures eventually, since prices are determined to a large extent by supply and demand.

I like to think that I’m doing my bit to keep Malaysia in the top ranking for most affordable Big Macs – by sticking to my teh tarik and roti canai during EPL matches.

ps: i do hope u really enjoy ur cheapest bigmac in the world now haha

LAX

Like everyone else, I too have this uneasy feeling of going for the LAX's 9 days trip. And mine is ON, next month. Yes, the roster was out a few days back. Not that I can't be away from home for too long, but the fact that I can't have my Malaysian meal for a quite sometime is too much for me. Lagi satu yang malasnya tu part nak kena dok Taipei and you will spent more than you earn kat L.A nanti.

The Maxis Berhad IPO should keep me busy till this 5th. Anybody with a green form? I'm offering a cash reward for it =)

Oh ya, Apeng's wifey has given birth to a healthy baby boy in a private hospital near where I live, mid-day yesterday. Kongratulasi mate. I am happy for you. Hello Richard (it's Apeng's brand new born English name).

I'm a bit confused on this part, where the wifey went a bit excited when she was telling the story, on how she did gave birth normally to me story instead of Ina (Ina, Aboo and I paid a visit 8 hours after the birth). Jakarta

Jakarta, midday

Before my recent hari raya break, my last assignment was to Jakarta. I never been there, so my impression of it was purely influenced from what I saw on the telly. Part excited and part worried. At that time, anti-Malaysia sentiment was at its peak, heightened by the local media which wasn't helpful at all.

Jakarta, dusk

Jakarta, when it's dark

Okay. What do I think about Jakarta? Third world. Something in between KL and Bangkok. Or maybe more like Bangkok and Ho Chih Minh. Traffic overthere is massive. And I've learnt Senayan in Jakarta is a posh area. Gap between the rich and the poor is huge. Apart from the anti-Malaysia thingy, I think Indonesians, like we Malaysians are nice and of course far less kiasu than us. Almost everything is cheap. Food is nice. Disclaimer, I did not have sufficient time to explore and discover the huge Jakarta. So what I said here is what I've seen during my stay.

Warung Daun, Senayan, Jakarta
Where I iftar-ed, no photo of food as I were busy enjoying the good food, the nice patrons and being photographed thrice haha

And! Malaysian, please speak proper malay or english. Because we can't speak indon. Yang kita dok tengok kat tv tu slang orang gaji punya indon ok. Jangan memalukan diri sendiri. If not, forget the idea of chatting up the wooooo Indonesian girls. No, I wasn't talking from experience =P
